Elon Musk is a South African-born American entrepreneur, inventor, and business magnate. He was born on June 28, 1971, in Pretoria, South Africa. Musk is best known as the co-founder and CEO of several companies, including Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, and The Boring Company.
Musk spent much of his childhood in South Africa and developed an early interest in computers and technology. He moved to the United States in 1995 to study at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned dual bachelor's degrees in physics and economics. He later attended Stanford University but dropped out after just two days to pursue his entrepreneurial ambitions.
In 1995, Musk co-founded Zip2, a company that provided business directories and maps to newspapers. The company was eventually sold to Compaq for nearly $300 million, and Musk used his share of the profits to start X.com, an online payment company that eventually became PayPal. PayPal was sold to eBay in 2002 for $1.5 billion.
After the sale of PayPal, Musk turned his attention to space exploration and electric cars. In 2002, he founded SpaceX with the goal of reducing the cost of space travel and eventually colonizing Mars.
