Biography of Ratan Tata


Ratan Tata is an Indian businessman, investor, philanthropist, and a former chairman of Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group. He was born on December 28, 1937, in Bombay, India.


Ratan Tata is the son of Naval Tata, who was the adopted son of Sir Ratan Tata, the former chairman of Tata Sons. After completing his schooling in Mumbai, Ratan Tata went to the United States to study architecture and structural engineering at Cornell University. He later earned a degree in Advanced Management Program from Harvard Business School.


In 1962, Ratan Tata started his career at Tata Steel, working on the shop floor as an apprentice. He later joined Tata Motors, where he played a significant role in the development of the Tata Indica, the first fully indigenous passenger car of India. In 1991, he became the chairman of Tata Sons, succeeding J.R.D. Tata.


Under his leadership, the Tata Group diversified into new sectors such as information technology, telecommunications, and hospitality. The group also acquired several international companies, including Jaguar Land Rover, Tetley Tea, and Corus Steel.


Apart from his business acumen, Ratan Tata is also known for his philanthropy. He established the Tata Trusts, which are among the largest charitable organizations in India. He has also contributed to various educational and healthcare initiatives in India.





Ratan Tata received several awards and honors for his contributions to business and philanthropy. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008, two of the highest civilian awards in India. In 2013, he was also awarded the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to the UK-India relations.


Ratan Tata retired as the chairman of Tata Sons in 2012 but continues to be involved in philanthropic initiatives and serves as a mentor to young entrepreneurs.
